Alvin & The Chipmunks

Alvin and the Chipmunks is an American animated musical act created by Ross Bagdasarian in 1958, originally billed as David Seville and the Chipmunks. The group is built around three anthropomorphic chipmunk characters — Alvin, Simon, and Theodore — whose signature high-pitched voices were achieved by Bagdasarian recording his own vocals and speeding up the playback, a technique he had already used to great effect on the novelty hit «Witch Doctor» earlier that year. Their breakthrough came with «The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)», which introduced the characters and became an enduring holiday classic.

After Bagdasarian's death in 1972, the franchise was revived the following year by his son Ross Bagdasarian Jr. and daughter-in-law Janice Karman, who took over voicing the characters and kept the brand alive through new recordings, television series, and eventually a run of feature films beginning in the 2000s. Across generations, the Chipmunks became known for high-energy, sped-up covers of contemporary pop, rock, country, and R&B hits alongside original novelty songs, making them one of the most commercially successful children's music acts in history.

The act's catalog spans decades and styles, from mid-century pop standards to covers of modern chart hits, unified by the group's distinctive helium-pitched vocal sound.
