About the artist
Alla Pugacheva (born 15 April 1949 in Moscow) is the most iconic pop singer of the Soviet and post-Soviet era, often called the Prima Donna of Russian estrada. She became a national sensation in 1975 after winning the Golden Orpheus festival with «Arlekino», a performance whose theatrical, almost clownish energy set her apart from the era's more restrained pop stars. Over the following decades she released a string of songs that entered the Russian musical canon, including «Million Alykh Roz», «Ne otrekayutsya lyubya» and «Million Scarlet Roses», blending pop, light rock and orchestral arrangements with a powerful, emotionally direct voice.
Beyond performing, Pugacheva wrote and produced much of her own material, unusual for a Soviet-era female star, and shaped her stage persona with flamboyant costumes and dramatic staging. She was named People's Artist of the USSR in 1988 and founded her own Theatre of Song. In the 2000s she mentored young performers on the reality show «Fabrika Zvyozd», extending her influence into a new generation of Russian pop.
Her farewell concert tour, announced in 2009, became a major cultural event stretching over several years. Decades after her breakthrough, Pugacheva remains a towering reference point for Russian-language pop music and a symbol of Soviet and Russian celebrity culture.
