About the artist
Alice Phoebe Lou, born Alice Matthew on July 19, 1993, is a South African singer-songwriter based in Berlin, Germany. She grew up on a mountainside in South Africa, raised on her parents' record collection and immersed in theatre and the arts through a local Waldorf school, an upbringing that nurtured a strong sense of independence and creative curiosity from an early age.
She developed her craft busking on the streets of Berlin, honing a bluesy, folk-rooted sound built around captivating, intimate vocals and stripped-back instrumentation. Over time her music expanded beyond pure folk into a broader palette touching rock, R&B, and electronic textures, while retaining the raw, unpolished intimacy of her street-performance origins.
Known for songs like «She», «Witches», and «Grey», Lou has built a career rooted in independence, often self-releasing music and maintaining creative control outside the traditional label system. Her work is marked by introspective, often feminist songwriting and an atmospheric, organic production style that reflects her journey from busker to internationally recognized artist.
