Alf Prøysen

Alf Prøysen (1914–1970) was a Norwegian author, poet, songwriter, and musician from Rudshøgda in Hedmark, whose warm, humorous storytelling made him one of the most beloved cultural figures in Norway during the twentieth century. Raised in modest rural circumstances, he drew heavily on everyday farm and village life for his lyrics and stories, giving his work a distinctly folk-rooted, homespun character that resonated across generations of Norwegians.

Prosyen worked across many media, publishing books and newspaper columns while also building a substantial catalogue of songs, many of which he performed himself on record, radio, and later television. His melodies are simple and singable, built for children and families as much as adults, and his lyrics blend gentle humor with tenderness and social observation.

Among his best-known songs are «Lillebrors vise», «Musevisa», «Blåbærvisa», and «Teddybjørnens vise», staples of Norwegian children's culture still performed and taught today. He is also remembered for creating the character Teskjekjerringa (the Mrs. Pepperpot stories), which extended his influence into international children's literature. His legacy endures through annual festivals and cultural institutions dedicated to preserving his work.
