Aivi & Surasshu

Aivi and Surasshu are an American electronic music duo formed by pianist Aivi Tran and composer/producer Steven Surasshu Velema. They met at the Game Developers Conference in 2012 and began collaborating soon after, blending Tran's classically-inflected piano work with Velema's chiptune and electronic production. Their debut collaborative album, The Black Box, released in 2013, established the fusion sound that would come to define their partnership.

The duo is best known for composing the score of the animated series Steven Universe, a role Tran took on after being approached by series creator Rebecca Sugar, subsequently bringing Velema in as a co-composer. Their work on the show spanned its full run and extended into related projects such as Steven Universe: The Movie and the epilogue series Steven Universe Future, with the music compiled across several soundtrack albums. They have also contributed music to other titles, including the RPG Ikenfell.

Musically, Aivi and Surasshu occupy a distinctive space between video game and animation scoring, marrying warm acoustic piano melodies with retro-inspired synth textures. This combination of intimacy and playfulness has made their soundtrack work widely recognized among fans of animated and game music, and their solo output continues to explore the same piano-meets-chiptune identity that first brought them together.
