Air

Air is a French electronic duo formed by Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel in Versailles, France. Emerging in the mid-1990s, the pair became central figures of the so-called French Touch movement, though their music leaned less toward dance floors and more toward lush, cinematic soundscapes built on vintage synthesizers, Rhodes piano, and analog textures reminiscent of 1970s film scores and easy-listening records.

Their 1998 debut album, Moon Safari, propelled them to international acclaim with tracks like «Sexy Boy» and «All I Need», establishing a dreamy, retro-futurist sound that stood apart from their electronic peers. The duo went on to compose the entirely instrumental soundtrack for Sofia Coppola's film The Virgin Suicides, further cementing their reputation for atmospheric, mood-driven composition, and collaborated with vocalists such as Beth Hirsch and Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Across subsequent albums, Air continued blending Gallic melodic sensibility with vintage electronic instrumentation, influencing a generation of downtempo and ambient-pop artists. Their work is frequently cited as a touchstone of turn-of-the-millennium French electronic music, admired for its warmth, restraint, and cinematic elegance.
