Ahmet Kaya

Ahmet Kaya (1957–2000) was a Turkish singer-songwriter of Kurdish and Turkish descent, born in Malatya. He grew up in a working-class environment and moved to Istanbul, where he worked as a taxi driver before breaking into the music scene with his debut album «Ağlama Bebeğim» in 1985. Over the following decade he became one of the most beloved voices in Turkish protest and folk-pop music, blending Anatolian folk melodies with socially conscious, often melancholic lyrics about love, exile, and injustice.

His sound sits at the crossroads of Turkish arabesque, folk, and soft rock, marked by his distinctive raspy voice and emotionally direct delivery. Albums such as «Şarkılarım Dağlara» cemented his status as a chart-topping artist through the 1990s, with songs like «Ağlama Bebeğim», «Şafak Türküsü», and «Kendine İyi Bak» becoming standards of Turkish popular music.

Kaya's career took a dramatic turn in 1999 when he publicly announced his intention to record in Kurdish, sparking a nationalist backlash at a televised awards ceremony. The controversy led to legal prosecution and his eventual exile from Turkey; he spent his final years in Paris, where he died in 2000. He remains a symbol of artistic defiance and cultural identity in Turkish music history.
