Agustín Lara

Agustín Lara (born Ángel Agustín María Carlos Fausto Mariano Alfonso del Sagrado Corazón Lara y Aguirre del Pino) was one of the most celebrated Mexican composers of the 20th century, renowned above all as a master of the bolero. Working through the mid-20th century, he became a defining voice of Mexican popular song, blending romantic lyricism with sophisticated melodic writing that drew on salon music, tango, and Spanish and Cuban influences.

His songs, often centered on themes of love, longing, and idealized women, were performed by countless singers across Latin America and Spain and were absorbed into the standard repertoire of Mexican and Spanish-language popular music. «Granada», one of his best-known compositions, became an international standard performed by opera singers, jazz musicians, and popular vocalists alike, while «Solamente una vez», «Noche de ronda», and «Piensa En Mi» remain among the most enduringly recorded boleros in the Spanish-speaking world.

Lara's influence extended well beyond his own recordings, as his compositions were adopted by generations of performers in film, radio, and concert repertoire, cementing his place as a foundational figure of the bolero and of Mexican romantic song more broadly.
