About the artist
Agnes Obel is a Danish singer-songwriter and pianist born in 1980 in Gentofte, near Copenhagen. She writes, performs, records, and produces her own material, building her sound around intimate piano compositions layered with strings and subtle vocal harmonies rather than orchestral grandeur.
Her debut album, «Philharmonics», released in 2010 on PIAS Recordings, established her reputation with its spare, melancholic arrangements and earned her multiple Danish Music Awards, including Best Album and Best Debut Artist. She continued developing this chamber-pop sound on later albums, incorporating songs such as «Riverside» and «Familiar» into a body of work marked by restraint and atmosphere.
Obel occupies a distinctive place in European singer-songwriter music, blending classical piano training with a minimalist, folk-inflected pop sensibility. Her music favors simple, almost childlike melodies over complexity, with lyrics that emerge gradually alongside the imagery already suggested by the music itself.
