Against All Logic

Against All Logic, commonly abbreviated A.A.L., is a recording alias of Chilean-American producer Nicolas Jaar, better known for his solo work under his own name and as one half of the duo Darkside. Under this moniker, Jaar steps away from the introspective, downtempo textures of his solo albums and leans into house, dance, and disco-inflected productions built around chopped funk and soul samples, filtered through his signature dubby, distorted production style.

The project first surfaced through tracks released via Jaar's own label, Other People, before being gathered on the compilation 2012–2017, which collected years of scattered singles into a cohesive statement about club music refracted through an experimental lens. A follow-up, 2017–2019, pushed the sound further into abrasive, distorted territory while retaining the same sample-based, groove-first foundation. Tracks like «This Old House is All I Have» and «Rave on U» showcase how A.A.L. treats vintage vocal and instrumental samples as raw material for hypnotic, physical dancefloor tracks.

Beyond the A.A.L. releases, Jaar's broader body of work includes production and collaboration with artists such as FKA twigs, extending his reach into pop and R&B contexts while maintaining the exploratory sensibility that defines all his projects.
