Afro Celt Sound System

Afro Celt Sound System are a British-based world music collective formed in the mid-1990s, celebrated for fusing traditional Irish and West African musical traditions with electronic production. Founded around producer Simon Emmerson, the group grew out of sessions that brought together Irish folk musicians, West African griots and percussionists, and electronic programmers, creating a sound that bridged acoustic folk instrumentation with dancefloor-ready beats.

The group signed to Peter Gabriel's Real World label, which shaped much of their early identity, and they became known for albums exploring themes of memory, spirituality and cultural connection, drawing on uilleann pipes, kora, djembe and other traditional instruments layered over club-influenced rhythms. Tracks such as «Release», «Mother» and «Persistence of Memory» reflect this blend of ambient, world and dance elements.

Afro Celt Sound System toured internationally and became a fixture of the world music festival circuit, admired for live performances that brought together musicians from vastly different traditions on a single stage. Their work helped popularize the fusion genre broadly termed Celtic-African or world-fusion music, influencing later acts working across similar cross-cultural lines.
