Achim Reichel

Achim Reichel, born in 1944 in Hamburg, is a German musician, producer, and songwriter whose career spans more than six decades. He first rose to prominence in the 1960s as the frontman of the beat group The Rattles, one of the most successful German bands of the era, known internationally for their hit «The Witch». That early period placed Reichel at the center of Hamburg's vibrant beat and rock scene, which drew comparisons to the British Merseybeat movement and even crossed paths with The Beatles during their formative Hamburg residencies.

After The Rattles, Reichel pursued a long and varied solo career, experimenting across genres and eventually finding a distinctive voice by blending rock instrumentation with North German folk traditions, sea shanties, and regional dialect. Songs like «Aloha Heja He» and «Drunken Sailor» reflect this maritime, Hamburg-rooted identity, while «Herr von Ribbeck auf Ribbeck im Havelland» shows his interest in setting German literary texts to music. His 1991 single «Aloha Heja He» became a major hit and remains one of his most recognizable songs.
