About the artist
Abdel Halim Hafez, born Abdel Halim Ali Shabana, was one of the most celebrated singers and actors in the history of Arabic music. Born in the Egyptian Nile Delta and raised partly in an orphanage after losing his parents at a young age, he trained in music and went on to become a defining voice of Egyptian song during the mid-twentieth century golden age. He is often ranked alongside Umm Kulthum and Mohamed Abdel Wahab as one of the pillars of modern Egyptian music.
Known affectionately as el-Andaleeb el-Asmar (The Dark-Skinned Nightingale), Hafez built his fame on an emotionally rich, romantic vocal style that resonated deeply with listeners across the Arab world. His songs, including «Ahwak», «Sawah», «Zay El Hawa» and «Gana El Hawa», blended traditional Arabic maqam-based melody with orchestral arrangements and a distinctly tender, intimate delivery that set him apart from more classically declamatory singers of his era. He also starred in numerous Egyptian films, further cementing his cultural presence.
Beyond performing, Hafez worked closely with leading composers and lyricists of his time and played an important role in shaping the sound of Egyptian pop and classical song. Decades after his death in 1977, his recordings remain widely listened to and his influence is still audible in Arabic popular music.
