Aaliyah

Aaliyah, born Aaliyah Dana Haughton on January 16, 1979, in Brooklyn, New York, and raised largely in Detroit, Michigan, became one of the defining voices of 1990s contemporary R&B alongside mononymous peers like Brandy and Monica. Discovered as a child performer and later connected through her uncle Barry Hankerson, founder of Blackground Records, she signed as a teenager and released her 1994 debut album Age Ain't Nothing But a Number, largely written and produced by R. Kelly, which yielded hits including «Back & Forth» and the Isley Brothers cover «At Your Best (You Are Love)».

Her sound evolved dramatically on later releases, moving toward the moody, futuristic production of Timbaland and Missy Elliott, which shaped hits like «Are You That Somebody?» and «Try Again» and helped push R&B toward a sparser, more electronic aesthetic that influenced a generation of artists. Her self-titled 2001 album, featuring «Rock the Boat» and «More than a Woman», further cemented her reputation for pairing understated vocals with cutting-edge, minimalist beats.

Beyond music, Aaliyah built a film career with roles in Romeo Must Die and Queen of the Damned, reinforcing her image as a multi-hyphenate style icon. Her life was cut short in a plane crash in August 2001 at age 22, but her catalog and visual aesthetic have remained profoundly influential on R&B and pop artists in the decades since.
