Busta Rhymes, nacido Trevor George Smith Jr. en Brooklyn, Nueva York, se dio a conocer como miembro de Leaders of the New School junto a Dinco D, Charlie Brown y Cut Monitor Milo. Sus versos invitados en «Scenario» de A Tribe Called Quest y su remix, así como en el remix de «Flava in Ya Ear» de Craig Mack, lo consolidaron como una de las voces invitadas más electrizantes del hip-hop antes de lanzarse en solitario.
Su álbum debut de 1996, The Coming, con el sencillo platino «Woo Hah!! Got You All in Check», presentó su flow veloz y elástico y su interpretación teatral, rasgos que se convirtieron en su sello a lo largo de una larga serie de lanzamientos platino.
