Thundercat

Thundercat, born Stephen Bruner on October 19, 1984, in Los Angeles, is a bassist, singer-songwriter, and producer whose virtuosic six-string bass playing has made him one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary funk, jazz, and R&B. He grew up in a musical family — his father Ronald Bruner Sr. drummed for Diana Ross and The Temptations, while his brothers Ronald Jr. and Jameel Bruner are also accomplished musicians — and he cut his teeth playing with thrash metal band Suicidal Tendencies before finding his signature sound.

His breakthrough came through his close partnership with producer Flying Lotus, whose Brainfeeder label released his solo albums, including the widely praised Drunk in 2017. His fluid, jazz-inflected basslines and falsetto vocals blend psychedelic soul with technical virtuosity, drawing comparisons to bass heroes like Jaco Pastorius while remaining deeply rooted in West Coast funk. He became a key architect of Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly in 2015, co-writing and performing on several tracks that helped define the album's jazz-hop sound.

Songs like «Them Changes» and «Friend Zone» showcase his knack for marrying emotional vulnerability with technical showmanship, while collaborations across hip-hop, jazz, and pop have made him one of the genre's most in-demand session players and a defining figure in the Los Angeles beat scene.
