The Temptations

The Temptations are an American vocal group from Detroit, Michigan, formed in 1960 and one of the defining acts of Motown Records. Emerging from a merger of two local groups, the Distants and the Primes, the classic line-up included Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, Paul Williams, Eddie Kendricks, and later David Ruffin, whose lead vocals powered hits like «My Girl» and «Ain’t Too Proud to Beg». Their sound moved from the polished, Smokey Robinson-crafted pop-soul of the mid-1960s toward the psychedelic soul productions of Norman Whitfield, yielding socially charged epics such as «Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone» and «Ball of Confusion».

Through numerous line-up changes over six decades, the group has remained a touring and recording institution, blending tight choreography, layered harmonies, and rotating lead vocalists. Their catalog spans doo-wop-inflected ballads, uptempo Motown pop, and extended funk-soul productions, influencing generations of R&B and soul vocal groups.

The Temptations helped define the Motown sound alongside acts like the Four Tops and the Supremes, and their Grammy-winning recordings remain a cornerstone of American soul music.
