The Knife

The Knife are a Swedish electronic music duo formed in 1999, consisting of siblings Karin Dreijer (also known as Fever Ray) and Olof Dreijer. Working largely in self-imposed anonymity, often performing in masks and refusing interviews, they built a reputation as one of the most distinctive and enigmatic acts in electropop, releasing music through their own label, Rabid Records, and later Mute in some territories.

Their breakthrough came with the album Silent Shout and its haunting single «Heartbeats», later widely covered and reinterpreted, which brought their icy, pitch-shifted vocals and eerie synth textures to a global audience. The Knife’s sound blends minimalist electronic production, dark atmospheres, and Karin’s distinctively processed, androgynous voice, drawing on influences from techno and industrial music while remaining firmly rooted in pop songcraft. Their later, more experimental double album Shaking the Habitual pushed further into abrasive, politically charged territory, engaging with themes of gender, power, and inequality.

Beyond their studio albums, The Knife scored the opera Tomorrow, in a Year, inspired by Charles Darwin, and toured with elaborate, theatrical stage shows that departed from conventional live electronic performance. The duo announced their split in 2014, but their influence on electropop, experimental pop, and a generation of artists exploring gender and anonymity in performance remains significant.
