The Impressions

The Impressions were an American vocal group central to the development of soul and gospel-infused R&B in Chicago during the late 1950s and 1960s. Formed from a group called The Roosters by Sam Gooden and brothers Richard and Arthur Brooks, the lineup expanded to include Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield before settling into the classic trio of Mayfield, Gooden and Fred Cash. Their sound blended smooth doo-wop harmonies with gospel fervor, and Mayfield's falsetto lead and guitar work became one of the group's defining features.

The Impressions are best remembered for socially conscious anthems that became touchstones of the civil rights era, including «Keep on Pushing», «People Get Ready» and «We're a Winner». «People Get Ready» in particular is often cited as one of the most influential songs to emerge from the movement, admired for its gospel-derived imagery and gentle, hymn-like arrangement.

Curtis Mayfield's songwriting and production for the group shaped a template that influenced later soul artists across Chicago and beyond, and the group's catalogue remains a foundational reference point for the fusion of gospel spirituality, romantic soul balladry and social commentary.
