About the artist

The Gap Band was an American funk and R&B group formed in Tulsa, Oklahoma, built around the three Wilson brothers, Charlie, Ronnie, and Robert. They took their name from three Tulsa streets — Greenwood, Archer, and Pine — a nod to the historic Black business district. After early singles in the 1970s, the group signed with Mercury and then Total Experience Records, where producer Lonnie Simmons helped shape their signature sound: heavy synthesizers, tight horn-inflected grooves, and Charlie Wilson's distinctive lead vocals.

Their run of albums in the early-to-mid 1980s, including Gap Band III and Gap Band IV, produced the singles that defined them — «You Dropped a Bomb on Me», «Early in the Morning», «Outstanding», and «Burn Rubber on Me (Why You Wanna Hurt Me)» — tracks that dominated R&B charts and filled dancefloors with a sound that bridged disco-era funk and the emerging electronic textures of the decade.

The Gap Band's rhythmic basslines and synth hooks became foundational source material for later genres. Hip-hop and G-Funk producers sampled their catalog extensively, and artists like Snoop Dogg, Warren G, and DJ Quik have drawn directly from their records, cementing the group's influence well beyond their own era of chart success.
