The Flamingos

The Flamingos were an American vocal group formed in Chicago in the early 1950s, one of the definitive acts of the doo-wop era. Built around interlocking members of the extended Carter and Wilson families, the group became known for lush, jazz-inflected harmonies and unusually sophisticated arrangements that set them apart from many of their doo-wop contemporaries.

Their signature recording, a 1959 version of the standard «I Only Have Eyes for You», reimagined the 1930s pop song with echo-laden production, shimmering vocal harmonies and a dreamlike atmosphere that became hugely influential, later covered and referenced by countless artists and cited as one of the era's most innovative vocal group recordings. The group's catalog also drew on jazz standards and romantic ballads such as «As Time Goes By» and «Goodnight Sweetheart», reflecting a more adult, sophisticated pop sensibility within R&B.

Over a long and shifting membership history spanning multiple decades and labels, the Flamingos helped define the transition from raw street-corner doo-wop toward more polished vocal group R&B, influencing the vocal arrangement style later heard in soul and pop music.
