About the artist
The Bug is the primary alias of English producer Kevin Martin, one of the most distinctive voices in bass-heavy electronic music since the late 1990s. Emerging from London's experimental and industrial scenes, he moved through dub, dancehall, and noise before settling into a sound that fuses sub-bass weight with the aggression of grime and dancehall vocal delivery. Signed to Ninja Tune, his work sits at the intersection of dubstep, dub, and rap, favoring stark, apocalyptic production over polish.
Martin built his reputation with a run of albums exploring urban unrest and menace: «London Zoo» in 2008, «Angels & Devils» in 2014, and «Fire» in 2021. Across these records he has repeatedly partnered with grime and dancehall MCs, most notably Flowdan, whose voice became closely associated with The Bug's sound. His willingness to cross genre lines extended to an unlikely but celebrated collaboration with Death Grips on «Fuck a Bitch».
Before his dancehall-inflected period, Martin explored more ambient and abstract territory on albums like «Tapping the Conversation» and «Pressure», reflecting a career defined by restless movement between extremes — from near-silence to overwhelming low-end pressure. His influence is felt across dubstep and bass music for treating the sound system, rather than the song, as the primary instrument.
