About the artist
R. Kelly, born Robert Sylvester Kelly on January 8, 1967, is an American singer, songwriter, and producer from the South Side of Chicago. He began performing as a teenager in Chicago subway stations before breaking through in the early 1990s, first with the group Public Announcement on the album Born Into the 90's, and then as a solo artist with 12 Play, which established his signature blend of explicit, sensual R&B with smooth, radio-friendly production.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Kelly became one of the most influential figures in contemporary R&B, equally comfortable writing intimate slow jams like «Bump N' Grind» and inspirational anthems like «I Believe I Can Fly». His music combined gospel-inflected vocal delivery, new jack swing rhythms, and hip-hop production sensibilities, and he wrote and produced not only for himself but for numerous other artists, shaping the sound of mainstream R&B for over a decade.
Beyond his own catalogue, Kelly is remembered for hits such as «Ignition (Remix)», «I'm a Flirt (Remix)», and «The World's Greatest», as well as for his role as a hitmaking producer behind the scenes. His legacy remains deeply controversial due to the serious criminal convictions related to sexual abuse that followed his career, which have significantly reshaped his public reputation.
