Portishead

Portishead are an English band formed in 1991 in Bristol, comprising singer Beth Gibbons, producer and programmer Geoff Barrow, and multi-instrumentalist Adrian Utley. Alongside Massive Attack, they are regarded as founding architects of trip-hop, the atmospheric, downtempo genre often called the «Bristol sound», known for combining hip-hop breakbeats, jazz textures, cinematic strings and Gibbons's haunting, emotionally raw vocals.

Their 1994 debut Dummy, featuring tracks like «Sour Times» and «Glory Box», was a critical and commercial breakthrough that won the Mercury Prize and defined the sound of 1990s trip-hop. The self-titled follow-up Portishead (1997) pushed the group's sound into darker, more abrasive territory.

After an extended hiatus during which members pursued solo work, the band returned in 2008 with Third, an album that traded some of the smoother trip-hop atmosphere for a starker, more industrial and krautrock-influenced sound, proving the group's continued evolution rather than nostalgia. Portishead remain influential for their meticulous production and Gibbons's distinctive, vulnerable voice, shaping generations of electronic and alternative artists.
