About the artist
Otis Redding was an American soul and R&B singer, songwriter, and producer, one of the most influential vocalists in the history of American popular music. Born in Dawson, Georgia, and raised in Macon, he rose through the Southern chitlin circuit before becoming the defining voice of the Stax Records sound in Memphis, where his raw, gospel-rooted delivery and horn-driven arrangements helped define soul music in the 1960s.
His catalogue includes «Try a Little Tenderness», «Respect» (later reinterpreted into a landmark hit by Aretha Franklin), «These Arms of Mine», and «Pain in My Heart». His 1967 performance at the Monterey Pop Festival introduced him to a broader rock audience and cemented his crossover appeal beyond R&B charts.
Redding died in a plane crash on December 10, 1967, at age 26, shortly before recording the song for which he is most remembered, «(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay», which became a posthumous number-one hit. His influence on soul singing style is still cited by generations of vocalists.
