Musiq Soulchild

Musiq Soulchild, born Taalib Hassan Johnson in 1977 in Philadelphia, is a singer and songwriter widely credited with helping shape the neo-soul sound of the early 2000s. As a teenager he honed his craft performing on the streets of Philadelphia, developing a smooth, conversational vocal style before dropping out of school to pursue music full time. After a period of homelessness, he signed to Def Jam's Def Soul imprint, where he built his reputation as one of the genre's most distinctive voices.

His debut album, «Aijuswanaseing» (2000), introduced his laid-back, jazz- and gospel-inflected R&B and went platinum, followed by «Juslisen» (2002), which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and «Soulstar» (2003). Songs like «Just Friends (Sunny)», «Love» and «Halfcrazy» became staples of the neo-soul era, blending live instrumentation with intimate, often philosophical lyrics about relationships and self-reflection.

In the mid-2000s Musiq moved to Atlantic Records, releasing «Luvanmusiq» (2007), «OnMyRadio» (2008) and «MusiqInTheMagiq» (2011), continuing to explore soulful, groove-based R&B alongside collaborators across the genre. He remains regarded as a key figure in keeping classic soul songwriting alive within contemporary R&B.
