M.I.A.

M.I.A., born Mathangi «Maya» Arulpragasam on July 18, 1975 in Hounslow, West London, to Sri Lankan Tamil parents, is one of the most genre-defying and politically outspoken artists to emerge from the 2000s. Raised partly in Sri Lanka during the civil war before returning to London in the mid-1980s, her early experience of conflict and displacement became a defining thread running through her music and visual art.

She broke through in the mid-2000s with albums like «Arular» and «Kala», mixing hip-hop, dancehall, baile funk, electro, and South Asian sounds into a dense, clattering, globally-minded sound unlike anything else in pop at the time. Her biggest crossover hit, «Paper Planes», built around a sampled Clash riff and gunshot-and-cash-register hook, became a defining, subversive pop moment and brought her political edge to mainstream audiences.

Across albums like «Maya» and «Matangi», M.I.A. continued pairing club-ready, bass-heavy production with lyrics addressing borders, immigration, war, and global inequality, as heard in later tracks like «Borders» and «Bad Girls». A trained visual artist as well as a musician, she has consistently paired her sound with striking imagery and videos, making her one of the most distinctive and influential crossover figures linking hip-hop, electronic music, and global pop.
