Mary J. Blige

Mary J. Blige, born Mary Jane Blige in the Bronx and raised in Yonkers, New York, rose from singing in her church and neighborhood to become one of the defining voices of contemporary R&B. A demo tape of her covering Anita Baker's «Caught Up in the Rapture», recorded at a mall recording booth, led to her signing with Uptown Records in 1989, where she crossed paths with a young intern named Sean «Puffy» Combs. Her 1992 debut album, What's the 411?, fused soulful vocals with hip-hop production and boom-bap beats, earning her the title Queen of Hip-Hop Soul and effectively inventing a new subgenre.
