Luther Vandross

Luther Vandross was an American singer, songwriter, and producer widely regarded as one of the defining voices of R&B. Born in New York City, he began his career as a background vocalist in the 1970s, singing behind artists such as David Bowie, Chaka Khan, and Diana Ross, before stepping into the spotlight with his own smooth, tenor-driven balladry. His 1981 debut album Never Too Much established the template for his sound: lush, orchestrated arrangements built around his warm, technically precise voice, equally suited to romantic ballads and uptempo dance numbers.

Throughout the 1980s and 90s, Vandross became synonymous with sophisticated, adult-oriented soul, scoring a run of R&B chart-toppers including «Stop To Love» and «Any Love», alongside beloved covers such as «A House Is Not a Home» and «Endless Love».
