Lil Tjay, born Tione Jayden Merritt in 2001 in the Bronx, New York, rose to prominence in the late 2010s as part of a wave of young New York rappers blending melodic hooks with street narratives. He first gained attention through freestyles and singles like «Resume» and «Brothers» before scoring his breakout Billboard Hot 100 hit alongside Polo G on «Pop Out».
