Lauryn Hill

Lauryn Hill is an American singer, rapper and songwriter who first rose to prominence as a member of the Fugees, alongside Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel, whose album The Score became one of the defining hip-hop records of the 1990s. Within the group and beyond it, she stood out for combining rapping and singing with equal command, at a time when few female artists in hip-hop were given the same range.

Her solo debut, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, remains her defining work, fusing rap, R&B, soul and reggae influences into a cohesive album built around themes of love, faith, motherhood and self-respect. Songs like «Doo Wop (That Thing)», «Ex-Factor» and «To Zion» showcased her songwriting depth and vocal range, and the album became a landmark for its combination of socially conscious lyrics with radio-friendly craftsmanship, expanding what a woman in rap and R&B was expected to represent.

After the success of her debut, Hill largely stepped back from regular album releases, though she has continued to perform live over the years, including notable appearances and collaborations. She later released MTV Unplugged 2.0, a stripped-down live album that moved toward folk-influenced songwriting, a departure from her earlier sound. Despite a relatively small catalog, her influence on rap, R&B and neo-soul remains significant, and she is widely regarded as one of the most important artists to emerge from 1990s hip-hop.
