About the artist
Keith Sweat is an American R&B singer-songwriter and producer from New York, widely credited as one of the pioneers of New Jack Swing, the genre that fused R&B vocal traditions with hip-hop rhythms and production in the late 1980s. His 1987 debut album, «Make It Last Forever», was a landmark release for the sound, spawning hits like the upbeat «I Want Her» and its sultry title track, and helped set a template that other R&B artists of the era would follow.
Sweat's career continued strong into the 1990s, with his self-titled 1996 album producing platinum-certified singles «Twisted» and «Nobody», the latter a duet with Athena Cage that became one of his signature hits. His voice, marked by a distinctive rasp and emotive delivery, became a hallmark of romantic and often seductive R&B balladry and mid-tempo grooves throughout his career.
Beyond his own recording career, Sweat has played a significant role as a talent developer, discovering and signing the R&B groups Silk and Kut Klose to his own label. He was honored as Favorite Male R&B/Soul Artist at the 1997 American Music Awards, and has remained active in the industry as host of a syndicated R&B radio show based in New York City, continuing his influence on the genre he helped define.
