Karyn White

Karyn White is an American R&B and pop singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, California, born in 1965, who rose to prominence in the late 1980s with a string of hit singles built on smooth, contemporary R&B production. Her self-titled 1988 debut album was crafted with producers L.A. Reid and Babyface, and it became one of the defining records of the era's new jack swing and adult-contemporary R&B sound, spawning multiple chart-topping singles and earning platinum certification.

Songs such as «Superwoman», «The Way You Love Me» and the Babyface duet «Love Saw It» all reached number one on the R&B singles chart, establishing White as one of the most successful female voices in R&B at the turn of the decade; «Superwoman» in particular became an enduring anthem and earned her industry recognition as the top R&B single of its year. Her follow-up album, made with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, produced her biggest overall hit, «Romantic», which topped both the pop and R&B charts and achieved gold certification, cementing her crossover appeal beyond the R&B format.

White continued recording into the mid-1990s with a third studio album before stepping back from the spotlight. Her clear, agile vocal delivery and her partnerships with some of R&B's most influential producers of the late 1980s and early 1990s left a lasting mark on the genre's sound during that period.
