J.J. Fad

J.J. Fad was an American female rap trio formed in Rialto, California, in the Inland Empire east of Los Angeles. The group became one of the first female acts to gain national attention in hip hop thanks to their breakout single «Supersonic», a fast-paced, electro-tinged party track built on rapid-fire chants and a bouncy beat. The song was released on Ruthless Records, the label co-founded by Eazy-E, and its commercial success helped fund the label's early operations, connecting J.J. Fad directly to the rise of N.W.A and West Coast gangsta rap even though their own sound stayed firmly in the playful, upbeat electro-rap tradition.

«Supersonic» crossed over onto pop and dance charts and earned the group a Grammy nomination, a rare feat for a female rap act at the time. Follow-up tracks such as «Eenie Meenie Beats» and «Ain't Nothing Comin'» continued the group's high-energy, rhythmically dense style, characterized by tongue-twisting call-and-response verses over synthesized beats rather than the harder-edged sampling that would later define much of West Coast rap.

While J.J. Fad's mainstream visibility faded after the late 1980s, their influence persisted as an early example of commercially successful female rappers and as a foundational act in Ruthless Records' history, tying them to one of the most important label stories in hip hop.
