Jay Sean

Jay Sean, born Kamaljit Singh Jhooti, is a British-Indian singer and songwriter from Hounslow, London, raised in Southall within a Punjabi Sikh family. He first gained recognition as a pioneer blending Bhangra influences with R&B alongside the Rishi Rich Project, before evolving into a more electro-pop and R&B-driven solo sound that eventually crossed over into the American market.

His stage name derives from his surname's initial combined with «Shaan», a Punjabi word for glory or pride that his grandmother used to call him. He initially trained in medicine before a hit collaboration, «Dance with You (Nachna Tere Naal)», led him to sign with Virgin Records and pursue music full-time. His debut album Me Against Myself launched his career in the UK Asian and mainstream markets.

Jay Sean went on to achieve major international crossover success with singles like «Down» and «Ride It», becoming one of the first British Asian artists to top American charts. His catalogue spans R&B, pop, rap-adjacent, and electronic-leaning production, reflecting his path from underground Bhangra-R&B fusion to global pop stardom.
