Hank Williams Jr. is an American singer-songwriter and the son of country music legend Hank Williams. He began his career performing his father’s songs as a teenager, but after a near-fatal fall while mountain climbing in Montana, he reinvented his sound, blending southern rock, blues, and outlaw country into a harder-edged style distinct from the honky-tonk tradition of his father’s generation.
That shift powered a run of commercial success from the late 1970s through the 1980s, with songs like «Family Tradition», «A Country Boy Can Survive», «All My Rowdy Friends (Have Settled Down)», and «Dinosaur» becoming staples of outlaw and Southern-rock-infused country. His music leaned into rowdy, working-class themes, Southern identity, and rock instrumentation layered over traditional country songwriting, helping widen country music’s audience among rock listeners.
Beyond music, Hank Jr. became a recognizable cultural figure, notably through his Monday Night Football theme «All My Rowdy Friends Are Here on Monday Night». He remains a major figure in the outlaw country movement and a link between his father’s classic honky-tonk era and the rock-inflected country that followed.
