About the artist
Ginuwine, born Elgin Baylor Lumpkin, is an American R&B singer who emerged in the mid-1990s as one of the artists shaping the futuristic sound that succeeded new jack swing. Discovered and produced by Timbaland and Missy Elliott, he built his signature sound around Timbaland's syncopated, minimal production, most famously on his 1996 debut single «Pony», built on an unmistakably sparse, bass-heavy beat that became one of the defining R&B singles of its era and later a wider pop-culture staple.
Through the late 1990s and early 2000s Ginuwine released a run of platinum-selling albums, pairing a smooth, sensual vocal delivery with cutting-edge, electronically inflected R&B production. Singles such as «Differences», «So Anxious», «In Those Jeans» and «Stingy» showed his range between romantic ballads and uptempo, groove-driven tracks, establishing him as one of the genre's leading male voices of the period.
Beyond his solo work, Ginuwine was part of the R&B group TGT alongside Tyrese and Tank, and collaborated widely across the R&B and hip-hop scene of his era. His long partnership with Timbaland in particular helped define a distinctly futuristic strain of late-1990s R&B that shaped the genre's sound for years afterward.
