Gene Autry

Gene Autry (1907–1998) was an American singer, actor and one of the most influential figures in the development of country music, widely known as «the Singing Cowboy». Born in Texas, he rose to fame in the 1930s and 1940s through radio, records and a long string of Hollywood Western films in which he played a guitar-toting, morally upright cowboy hero, helping popularize country and western music to a mass national audience decades before it became a mainstream genre in its own right.

Autry recorded hundreds of songs across his career, many of which became deeply embedded in American popular culture, including cowboy standards like «Back in the Saddle Again» and traditional numbers such as «Red River Valley», «Deep in the Heart of Texas» and «The Yellow Rose of Texas». He is equally, if not more, remembered for his Christmas recordings — «Here Comes Santa Claus (Down Santa Claus Lane)», which he co-wrote, «Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer» and «Up on the House Top» — which turned him into one of the defining voices of the American holiday season.

Beyond music, Autry built a lasting business empire spanning film, television, radio and sports team ownership, but his lasting legacy in music rests on his role bridging cowboy mythology, folk tradition and commercial country music, making him one of the genre's foundational stars.
