Freddy Fender

Freddy Fender was born Baldemar Garza Huerta and raised in San Benito, Texas, in a Mexican-American family. He began his recording career performing Spanish-language covers of songs by Elvis Presley and Hank Williams, finding success in Mexico while facing barriers in the American market of the 1950s, where a Spanish surname was seen as a commercial liability. In 1959, at age twenty-one, he adopted the stage name Freddy Fender to pursue broader crossover appeal, and scored a minor R&B hit around 1960 before his career was interrupted by a marijuana-related prison sentence.

Fender staged a remarkable comeback in 1975 with «Before the Next Teardrop Falls», a bilingual ballad that became a major country and pop crossover hit, followed by «Wasted Days and Wasted Nights», which topped the country charts. These records established him as one of the first Mexican-American artists to achieve mainstream country stardom, blending Tex-Mex sensibilities, traditional country balladry, and Spanish-language verses in a way that resonated across both English- and Spanish-speaking audiences.

In 1988, Fender co-founded the Texas Tornados with Doug Sahm, Augie Meyers, and Flaco Jiménez, a supergroup that fused conjunto, country, and rock and roll and produced the beloved regional hit «(Hey Baby) Que Paso». Fender's career reflects a bridging of cultures and genres, and his voice remains closely associated with the Tex-Mex sound and the broader story of Mexican-American music crossing into the American mainstream.
