En Vogue is an American R&B vocal group formed in Oakland, California in 1989 by producers Thomas McElroy and Denzil Foster, who assembled the group's original lineup — Cindy Herron, Terry Ellis, Maxine Jones and Dawn Robinson — after a talent search. Blending doo-wop-inspired harmonies with contemporary new jack swing production, the group became one of the defining vocal acts of early-1990s R&B.

Their debut album «Born to Sing» (1990) introduced their layered, classically trained harmony style with hits including «Hold On», which reached the upper tiers of the Billboard Hot 100. The follow-up, «Funky Divas» (1992), pushed the group to its commercial peak, pairing polished vocal arrangements with a bolder, more assertive image; singles like «My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)», «Giving Him Something He Can Feel» — a reworking of the Aretha Franklin song — and «Free Your Mind» became genre staples that crossed from R&B into the pop mainstream.

En Vogue's sound, built on intricate four-part harmony rather than a single lead voice, influenced a generation of R&B and pop vocal groups that followed. Their collaboration with Salt-N-Pepa on «Whatta Man» further cemented their presence at the intersection of R&B, hip-hop and pop in the 1990s, and the group's catalogue remains a touchstone of the era's vocal group sound.
