Durand Jones & The Indications

Durand Jones & The Indications are an American soul and R&B revival band formed by musicians who met as students at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Co-fronted by vocalists Durand Jones and Aaron Frazer, who trade lead vocal duties and songwriting, the group builds its sound on the golden-era soul of the late 1960s and early 1970s, drawing on the vocal styles of Jackie Wilson and Curtis Mayfield while filtering the material through a modern, crate-digging sensibility shaped as much by hip-hop sampling culture as by classic Southern soul and gospel.

The band's self-titled 1978 debut was recorded on a shoestring budget and built a following on the strength of its raw, direct sound and songs like «Smile» and «Can’t Keep My Cool». Their sophomore album, American Love Call, expanded the palette with lush string arrangements and backing vocals, moving toward a more romantic, orchestrated soul sound while keeping the group's live-band chemistry at the center. Aaron Frazer's falsetto and Durand Jones's grittier baritone give the band two distinct voices within the same songs, a contrast that has become one of its defining features.

Beyond their albums, the band is known for an energetic live show that has made them festival favorites, and both Jones and Frazer have pursued acclaimed work outside the group — Frazer as a solo artist releasing his own soul records. The band's catalog, including songs like «Is It Any Wonder?», «Flower Moon» and «Cruisin’ to the Park», sits at the center of a broader revival of vintage soul aesthetics in contemporary music, alongside acts on labels associated with reissue and deep-soul culture such as Colemine Records and Dead Oceans.
