Donny Hathaway

Donny Hathaway was an American soul singer, pianist, songwriter, and arranger whose emotive vocal delivery and gospel-rooted musicianship made him one of the defining voices of 1970s soul. Raised in St. Louis and trained at Howard University, he built his early career as a session musician, arranger, and producer before emerging as a solo artist with a string of critically acclaimed albums.

Hathaway is perhaps best known for his enduring duet partnership with Roberta Flack, which produced hits like «Where Is the Love» and «The Closer I Get to You», as well as for composing the holiday standard «This Christmas», later covered by countless artists. His solo work, including «A Song for You», showcased a rare combination of technical sophistication, gospel intensity, and emotional vulnerability that influenced generations of R&B and soul musicians.

Hathaway struggled with mental illness for much of his career, and his life was cut short in 1979. Despite a relatively brief discography, his influence on soul, R&B, and neo-soul artists remains profound, and his recordings continue to be sampled and celebrated as touchstones of the genre.
