Dobie Gray

Dobie Gray, born Lawrence Darrow Brown in Brookshire, Texas, was an American singer whose career spanned soul, pop, country and rock. He broke through in 1965 with «The ‘In’ Crowd», a song that captured the mod dance-club energy of the era and became an anthem covered by countless other artists. Beyond music, Gray spent time as an actor, notably performing in the Los Angeles production of the musical «Hair», which shaped his versatile, theatrical approach to phrasing and vocal delivery.

His defining moment came in 1973 with «Drift Away», written and produced by Mentor Williams. The song's plea for music as an escape from everyday troubles resonated widely, reaching the US Top 5 and becoming one of the most enduring soft-rock and blue-eyed-soul recordings of the decade. Gray's warm, unhurried baritone and gift for emotional restraint made the song a staple of American radio for generations.
