About the artist
Death Grips are an experimental hip-hop group formed in Sacramento, California in 2010, built around the confrontational vocals of MC Ride (Stefan Burnett) and the abrasive, genre-bending production of drummer Zach Hill and Andy Morin. Emerging with the free mixtape Exmilitary in 2011, the group fused industrial noise, punk aggression and glitchy electronics with rap, creating a sound that was harsh, dense and largely unclassifiable within conventional hip-hop.
Their major-label debut The Money Store brought wider attention, but the group became equally known for its unpredictable behavior: they were dropped by Epic Records after self-releasing the follow-up No Love Deep Web against the label's wishes, complete with explicit cover art. They subsequently ran their own label, Third Worlds, releasing albums like Government Plates and the sprawling double album The Powers That B, whose second half, Jenny Death, arrived after the band controversially announced a breakup that turned out to be temporary.
Death Grips have continued to release albums at an unpredictable pace, often surprise-dropping projects with little warning, cementing a reputation as one of the most confrontational and genre-defying acts to emerge from underground hip-hop and noise music, influencing a generation of experimental rap and electronic artists.
