deadmau5 is the stage name of Joel Thomas Zimmerman, a Canadian electronic music producer from Niagara Falls, Ontario, who rose to prominence in the late 2000s as one of progressive house's most recognizable figures — both for his music and for the giant LED mau5head helmet he performs in.
His sound blends driving, melodic progressive house with layered synth arpeggios and a producer's ear for texture, drawing as much from IDM and techno as from festival-ready dance music. Tracks like «Ghosts 'n' Stuff», «Strobe» and «The Veldt» (featuring vocalist Chris James) became genre staples, while releases on his own label, mau5trap, helped launch other electronic acts.
Beyond DJing, Zimmerman has been an outspoken commentator on EDM culture and business, released material on major labels alongside his independent work, and experimented with live-instrumentation and rock-adjacent collaborations. He remains one of the most consistently influential producers to emerge from the North American electronic dance scene of the 2000s and 2010s.
