Bomfunk MC's

Bomfunk MC's were a Finnish breakbeat and electro-hop group formed in Helsinki in 1998, active through the mid-2000s. The project was built around producer JS16 (Jaakko Salovaara), who crafted the group's signature fusion of breakbeat, electronica, and hip hop, and frontman B.O. Dubb (Raymond Ebanks), whose rapping and MC style gave the tracks their rhythmic drive. Their sound stood apart from typical rap of the era by leaning on breakdance-friendly breakbeat tempos rather than boom-bap or trap rhythms.

The group broke through internationally with «Freestyler» in 2000, a track that became a global club and chart hit and remains closely associated with early-2000s breakdance and turntablist culture. Follow-up singles such as «B-Boys & Flygirls», «Uprocking Beats», and «Turn It Up» continued the same formula of driving breakbeats paired with confident, party-oriented rapping, cementing the act's reputation within the European dance and hip hop crossover scene.

Bomfunk MC's are often cited as one of the most commercially successful acts to emerge from Finland's electronic music scene, helping popularize breakbeat outside underground club circles. The lineup around B.O. Dubb and JS16 shifted over the years, with the group eventually going on hiatus in the mid-2000s, but «Freestyler» in particular remains a lasting touchstone of the breakbeat era.
