Bobby Brown

Bobby Brown (born February 5, 1969, in Boston, Massachusetts) is an American singer, songwriter and dancer who first rose to fame as a founding member of the R&B group New Edition. Raised in the Orchard Park housing projects of Roxbury, he was pushed out of the group in 1985 due to friction over his stage antics and behavior, a split that turned out to be the making of his solo career. His 1988 album Don’t Be Cruel became one of the defining releases of the New Jack Swing era, fusing hip-hop rhythms with polished R&B vocals and slick choreography.

Brown’s sound drew on the funk and street energy of hip-hop while keeping the melodic hooks and vocal harmonies of classic soul, a combination that made him one of the architects of New Jack Swing alongside producers like Teddy Riley. Hits such as «My Prerogative», «Every Little Step», «Roni», «On Our Own» and «Humpin’ Around» showcased both his charisma as a performer and his knack for danceable, radio-ready records.

Beyond his solo work, Brown remained connected to New Edition through periodic reunions and later founded the group Heads of State. His influence on the New Jack Swing sound and his impact on the trajectory of R&B in the late 1980s and early 1990s remain widely acknowledged, even as his career was often overshadowed by his high-profile personal life.
