Boards of Canada

Boards of Canada are a Scottish electronic music duo formed by brothers Michael Sandison and Marcus Eoin, known for a hazy, nostalgic sound built from warped analog synthesizers, degraded tape textures and hip-hop-influenced breakbeats. Their name references the National Film Board of Canada, whose documentary soundtracks were an early influence, and their childhood years spent partly in Canada left a lasting mark on their aesthetic of faded, dreamlike memory.

After early self-released material through the 1990s, the duo signed to Warp Records and released their breakthrough album, «Music Has the Right to Children», in 1998, widely regarded as one of the most influential electronic records ever made and a foundational text for what later became known as IDM and the broader ambient/downtempo scene. They followed it with «Geogaddi» (2002), «The Campfire Headphase» (2005) and «Tomorrow's Harvest» (2013), each maintaining their signature blend of warm melancholy, subtly detuned pitches and cryptic, often unsettling undertones.

Boards of Canada are famously reclusive, rarely giving interviews or performing live, and have cultivated a mystique around their work through hidden messages, numerology and irregular release patterns. Their influence extends across electronic music, ambient, and beyond, shaping generations of producers drawn to their organic, tape-warped approach to synthesis.
