Blood Orange

Blood Orange is the primary recording project of British musician and producer Devonté Hynes, who first gained attention under the moniker Lightspeed Champion before shifting toward a funk- and R&B-rooted sound as Blood Orange. Based for much of his career in New York, Hynes writes, produces, and performs nearly everything himself, crafting a lush, introspective take on contemporary R&B that draws on 1980s funk, soul, and dance-pop textures alongside falsetto vocals.

His debut album «Coastal Grooves» (2011) introduced the project's hazy, guitar-inflected funk sound, while «Cupid Deluxe» (2013) expanded it into a fuller R&B palette and drew wide critical acclaim, later ranked among the best albums of its decade by outlets like Pitchfork. «Freetown Sound» (2016) — named for his father's Sierra Leonean hometown — pushed further into themes of identity, race, and community, reaching the top of the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop chart tier and earning some of the strongest reviews of his career, followed by «Negro Swan» (2018) and «Angel's Pulse».

Beyond his own albums, Hynes is a prolific songwriter and producer for other artists, including Solange, Sky Ferreira, and FKA twigs, and his work bridges indie, R&B, and pop songwriting circles. Blood Orange's music is known for dense, layered arrangements and lyrics that are often oblique or coded, addressing personal and social themes without stating them plainly.
