Black Coffee

Black Coffee is the performing name of Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo, a DJ and producer from Durban, South Africa, and one of the leading figures in African house music. His sound blends deep and Afro house rhythms with soulful, African-derived percussion and melody, often layered with futuristic, pulsating electronic textures that give his productions a distinctly homegrown yet globally minded feel.

He first entered the South African DJ scene in the early 2000s, gaining early recognition through the Red Bull Music Academy and releasing the track «Happiness» on a compilation shortly after. Before focusing fully on production and DJing, he had also performed as a backing vocalist alongside Zulu folk musician Madala Kunene. Over the years he built a reputation for reworking classic South African songs into club-ready house tracks, helping bring African house to international audiences and dance floors.

As his profile grew internationally, Black Coffee became known for collaborations spanning R&B, pop and electronic music, with songs such as «Drive», «Wish You Were Here» and «Superman» reflecting his ability to move between deep house grooves and more song-oriented, vocal-led material.
